Montclair Summer Openings and Jazz Festival Weekends

Ask a Montclair resident what's happening downtown this summer and the answer usually starts and ends with the Jazz Festival's August 15 Downtown Jamboree at Lackawanna Plaza. That answer is not wrong, but it misses the more interesting fact about the season: the new restaurant openings and the free live music are landing on the same half-mile of Bloomfield Avenue, on the same nights of the week, in a pattern that turns a Thursday evening walk into a small pre-show crawl.

The Jamboree is the finale. The summer itself is a five-week series of SOUNDCHECK sets at Wellmont Arts Plaza, with a wave of openings tucked between the Wellmont and Lackawanna Station. Once you see the map that way, the calendar starts assembling itself.

The half-mile spine, in walking order

Start at Lackawanna Station and head west up Bloomfield Avenue. Nearly every notable spring and summer opening sits within about a fifteen-minute walk of the front door of the Wellmont.

  1. Bagel Supreme Go, inside Lackawanna Station. The family-owned brand's 13th New Jersey location, tucked next to BDP just outside The Big Room, with a build-your-own cream cheese bar and gluten-free and vegan options.
  2. Insomnia Cookies, 332 Bloomfield Avenue. Opened April 11, 2026, running until 1 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.
  3. Tasca's old space at 377 Bloomfield, now Sam's Table. Chef Sam Stymest, formerly of Craft Bar in New York and Fascino and Corso 98 in Montclair, is opening in early September with a 26-seat room, an à la carte menu Thursdays and Sundays, and a $92 tasting menu Fridays and Saturdays. Worth knowing about now if you want a reservation later.
  4. Hummus Republic, 412 Bloomfield Avenue. Moved into the former Plaza Convenience space with customizable Mediterranean bowls, wraps, pitas, house-made hummus, and street-style fries.
  5. Ju-Ichi, 512 Bloomfield Avenue. The family-owned group's fourth storefront, following two in State College and one in Morristown, with a ramen broth that reportedly cooks 100-plus pounds of pork bones and more than 20 other ingredients in an 18-inch pot for about 24 hours.
  6. Sardela, Bloomfield Avenue. Opened in May 2026 with Aegean-inspired seafood, grilled meats, and mezze in a Santorini-styled room.
  7. Campofiore, 664 Bloomfield Avenue. The latest project from Stout NYC Hospitality, the group behind Allegory and Splendid Rooftop at the MC Hotel, taking over the former Thai Chef space with a farm-to-table Italian menu led by Chef Dan Drohan.
  8. Oggi Gelato, 40 Church Street. A half-block off Bloomfield in the former Oasis boutique space, and the first U.S. location for the brand, brought over by the Romanacci restaurant group.

That is eight reasons to already be on the street before the music starts.

Wellmont Arts Plaza, Thursdays through summer

The Montclair Jazz Festival's new SOUNDCHECK series runs five weeks on select evenings across June, July, and August at the Wellmont Arts Plaza, with each week keyed to one of the cities where jazz took root. The plaza itself sits right outside the Wellmont Theater off Bloomfield Avenue in downtown Montclair, meaning any of the openings above is either across the street or a short walk east.

The finale on August 15 is the free Downtown Jamboree, drawing tens of thousands across eight acres of festival grounds with multiple stages, youth ensembles, local vendors, and pop-up moments. This year's programming centers on the centennials of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, with a tribute performance and festival artwork by Andres Chaparro.

If you have never treated a SOUNDCHECK night as a dinner reservation, this is the summer to change that. The math is straightforward: Ju-Ichi at 6, walk two blocks, catch the set, walk two blocks back for Oggi.

Upper Montclair is running its own July

The Bellevue Avenue corridor is having a parallel summer that has almost nothing to do with the Wellmont and everything to do with what people order twice a week.

Jackie's, formerly Jackie's Grillette, expanded into the larger space next door at 612 Valley Road, keeping the wraps, sandwiches, breakfast, and fresh juices that built the following in the first place. A few blocks away, the team behind Dan & Day's Burger Place is opening Farmhouse Fried Chicken directly across Bellevue Avenue from their existing restaurant. Owner Dan Campeas is candid about the branding:

"We joke that we should've just named it The Chicken Place. Because everybody just calls it the chicken place. Even now we call it the chicken place."

The opening is expected in roughly six to eight weeks from late May, which puts the ribbon in mid-to-late July. Campeas grew up in Montclair and built his business life around Bellevue Avenue, starting as a twenty-year-old college dropout delivering for Tinga and Mr. Dino's. The point is that Upper Montclair's summer opening is not a chain rollout. It is a local operator doubling down on the block he already runs.

The Orange Road pocket

One street off Bloomfield, at 401 Orange Road, is where the season's most-watched debut is landing. Pig & Butter is bringing a "brunch-all-the-time" concept from chef and owner Sherri Grimes, who locals will recognize from Anderson's 1949, with two side-by-side rooms: one for brunch, dinner, cocktails, and Unionville Vineyards wine, the other a coffeehouse and eatery. The ribbon-cutting is Friday, July 31 at 10 a.m. If you have been watching that storefront wonder when the paper was coming off the windows, that is your date.

Two other things to put on the calendar from the same corner of the food scene:

  • The Saint Clair's Masters Class series opens with Summer Seafood Secrets on Thursday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m., a live cooking demonstration from Chef Leia Gaccione with a three-course dinner for $80.
  • Chef Sam Stymest is reuniting with Chef Damon Wise on Sunday, July 26 for a six-course tasting in the Stymest family backyard, the same place Sam's Table began as a pandemic pop-up. Stymest worked alongside Wise at Tom Colicchio's Craft in New York.

Both are the sort of one-night things that are easy to miss if you are not already watching.

Two weekends to plan around

The calendar collapses to two anchor Saturdays and one long-running film series.

Saturday, August 1: Montclair Pride Festival. Out Montclair postponed the festival from June to Saturday, August 1, 2026, after evaluating what it would take to keep the event free and accessible, in coordination with the Township of Montclair and public safety partners.

Saturday, August 15: Downtown Jamboree. The full-day free finale at Lackawanna Plaza.

All summer: Movie Nights Under the Stars. Montclair Film runs free outdoor screenings in community spaces, with venues opening at 7 p.m. and films starting at sundown, blankets and picnics encouraged. The July 26 screening is Best in Show, if that helps you decide.

That is three weekends worth of programming that costs nothing except the meal you eat first.

The resident move

If you have lived here more than a year or two, you already know the reflex: block the Jamboree, tell out-of-town family to come in on August 15, ignore the rest. The more interesting reflex this year is to pick one Thursday SOUNDCHECK night, walk it as a dinner-then-music route through two of the new openings on the list above, and use it as an excuse to see what has actually changed on the block. Most of these places will still be here next summer. A few will not. That is worth an evening on foot.

Montclair, and Essex County more broadly, has a habit of turning over its ground-floor retail faster than the housing stock. If you are thinking about how the neighborhood is changing at the property level too, Justin Torres and the Just Sells team at Prominent Properties Sotheby's International Realty are happy to talk through what the summer market looks like on your street.
